The short answer
Carpet is often dry within several hours after hot water extraction and sometimes within an hour or two after low-moisture cleaning. Humidity, thick padding, how much water was used and airflow all change the timing. Running fans and opening windows helps, and no exact drying time can be promised.

How long does each method take?
Hot water extraction (often called steam cleaning) leaves carpet damp, and it usually takes several hours to dry. Low-moisture methods use little water, so carpet is often walkable within an hour or two. Ask the professional which method is planned and what to expect.
What slows drying down?
- High humidity, which is common in Southeast Minnesota summers.
- Thick carpet padding that holds water.
- Poor airflow in closed-up rooms, basements and stairwells.
- Heavily soiled carpet that needed extra rinsing.
- Cool, damp weather with the furnace or air conditioner off.
How can you speed up drying?
- Run ceiling fans and set box fans so they blow across the carpet.
- Open windows when the weather allows, or run the furnace fan or an air conditioner in damp weather.
- Use a dehumidifier in basements.
- Keep pets and children off damp carpet, and wear clean socks, not shoes, if you must walk on it.
- Wait until the carpet is dry before putting furniture back, or put foil or plastic tabs under furniture legs.
If carpet still feels damp or smells musty after a day or more, contact the professional who cleaned it.
