The short answer
Clear small items, toys and breakables off the floor, vacuum if you can, secure pets, and point out stains and problem spots. Ask whether large furniture will be moved or cleaned around, and make sure the professional has parking and access. Plan for drying time before using the room again.

What should you do before the visit?
- Clear toys, shoes, small furniture, breakables and anything else on the floor.
- Vacuum if you can. It is not required, but it helps remove loose dirt first.
- Secure pets and plan where children and pets will wait while carpet dries.
- Make sure the professional can park close to the door and has a clear path in winter.
- Check which outlets and water sources are available if you are asked.
What should you tell the professional?
- Which rooms, stairs and hallways you want cleaned.
- Where the stains are, what caused them and how old they are.
- Whether pets have had accidents.
- The carpet fiber if you know it, and any warranty or care-label instructions.
- Any allergies or sensitivities in the home, so cleaning products can be discussed.
What should you do afterward?
Keep traffic off damp carpet, run fans, and open windows when the weather allows. Wait until it is dry before replacing furniture or walking on it in shoes. If a spot looks like it has returned or stays damp, contact the professional soon after the visit.
