The short answer
Vacuum rugs weekly, more often in high-traffic spots, and plan a deeper cleaning about once a year for busy rooms or homes with pets. Lightly used rugs may need it less often. Fiber matters, so check the maker's care label and ask a professional about wool, silk or antique rugs.

How often should you vacuum a rug?
Weekly is a good starting point, and entry rugs and rugs under dining tables may need it more often. Vacuum with the beater bar off on delicate or fringed rugs, and never run the vacuum over the fringe.
Rotate the rug every few months so wear and sun fading even out.
How often does a rug need a deep clean?
- High-traffic rugs, or rugs in homes with pets and children: about once a year.
- Rugs in quieter rooms: every year or two, or when they look dull or smell stale.
- Any rug after a spill, pet accident or winter salt exposure that vacuuming does not fix.
Does the rug fiber matter?
Yes. Wool, cotton, silk and synthetic rugs respond differently to water and cleaners, and dyes can run on some hand-knotted rugs. Hand-knotted, antique and silk rugs are best left to a professional. When you request a quote, mention the size, fiber, whether it is hand-knotted or machine-made, and any fringe.
