The short answer
Upholstery cleaning codes tell you how a fabric may be cleaned. W means water-based cleaners, S means solvent-based cleaners only, WS means either, and X means vacuum or brush only, with no cleaner of any kind. Look for the tag under a seat cushion, and test any cleaner on a hidden spot.

What does each code mean?
- W: clean with water-based cleaners or foam.
- S: clean with water-free, solvent-based dry-cleaning products only. Water may leave marks or shrink the fabric.
- WS: either water-based or solvent-based cleaners may be used.
- X: vacuum or brush lightly only. Do not use water or solvent cleaners, which can stain or damage the fabric.
Some makers use other wording, such as "cleaning code" followed by a letter, or a care symbol, so read the tag closely.
Where do you find the code?
Look for a tag sewn under a seat cushion, on the underside of the frame or along the back or skirt. Take a photo of the tag. Sharing the code when you request a quote helps the professional describe the job accurately.
What if there is no tag?
Treat the piece with caution. Vacuum it, test any cleaner on a hidden spot such as the back or underside, and wait for it to dry to check for color change or water rings. Velvet, silk and some natural fibers are easy to damage, so ask a professional about them.
